ACK Diocese of Butere has successfully concluded a three-day Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) and Unboxing the Law (ULB) training, followed by a Free Legal Aid Clinic that attracted more than 100 community members.
The clergy training brought together over 100 participants, including clergy and representatives from other Christian denominations. Participants explored the Human Rights Framework, AJS practices and implementation, the Agency Theory of Jurisdiction, the Doctrine of Interaction, and the role of clergy and other actors in promoting people-centred justice.
In her closing remarks, Bishop Rose Okeno thanked the facilitators and participants for their dedication and encouraged them to put the knowledge and skills acquired into practice.
The Free Legal Aid Clinic brought together advocates from various law firms and institutions, alongside Chief Patrick Andabwa of Marama Central, Chief Zablon Panda of Township Location, the OCS Butere Police Station, and Mr. Job Namale, who provided sign language interpretation. Over 100 community members received legal advice and guidance.
The two initiatives highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Church, legal professionals, government agencies and local leadership in promoting access to justice and empowering communities.
