On Friday, May 8, 2026, the global community commemorates International Nurses and Midwives Day, a significant occasion for nurses worldwide.
Bishop Rose Okeno of the ACK Diocese of Butere presided over the ceremony at Butere Level IV County Hospital. Addressing the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” she likened the nursing profession to a divine ministry, akin to the healing ministry of the church, emphasizing the shared mission of healing.
She highlighted the importance of this day in recognizing the invaluable contributions of the nursing profession. She expressed her gratitude to nurses, acknowledging her personal reliance on their services daily. Additionally, she commended the Butere County hospital for its transformation and its positive impact on the Butere community, noting the contribution of early missioners to Butere in 1912, who founded Butere hospital, as they came preaching, teaching and healing.

Drawing parallels between the teachings and healing work of Jesus and the core mission of healthcare, Bishop Okeno underscored the historical role of nurses as caregivers for centuries. She urged them to continue serving with diligence and dedication, as exemplified by Christ.
In conclusion, she honored the dedication, sacrifice, resilience, and compassionate service provided by nurses globally.
