The ACK Diocese of Butere hosted a highly successful workshop on the Alternative Justice System (AJS), which brought together clergy from the diocese alongside invited pastors and Muslim spiritual leaders.

During the workshop, participants were introduced to fundamental legal concepts addressing pressing issues faced by the community. The session was expertly facilitated by Hon. Justice (Prof.) Joel Ngugi, a judge of the Court of Appeal, who highlighted the significance of the Alternative Justice System within the constitutional framework and provided a biblical foundation for its principles.

Justice Ngugi encouraged the clergy to leverage their roles in God’s ministry to become advocates for the Alternative Justice System, emphasizing the transformative potential of their influence in the community.

Bishop Rose Okeno, the host of the workshop, emphasized on the involvement of religious leaders in the legal life of the community. She underscored the critical importance of creating safe spaces for marginalized People and the urgent need to advocate for their rights. In addition, the fourth diocesan bishop pointed out that many, including widows and young women, often struggle to access justice, resulting in ongoing injustices.

The workshop also welcomed notable attendees, including Jemimah Aluda, the head of the AJS Secretariat, as well as Bishop Daniel Gitau and Rev. Alex Muhoro from the Nakuru House of Reconciliation Pilot, among others. Other religious leaders were Bishop Justin wafula of Habari njema ministries, Bishop Ibrahim Makokha of Miracke center, sheikh Abdlrahim Wandati, AICMAR Governing Council Chair, Prof Esther Mombo, and several lawyers.

This collaborative effort reflects a commitment to fostering a more equitable and just society for all members of the community.

The workshop represents the second pre-launch activity organized by the ACK Diocese of Butere in anticipation of the release of the “Unboxing the Law in Butere” research report, which is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025.
