The ACK Diocese of Butere has officially launched the “Unboxing the Law in Butere” research report, a significant initiative aimed at educating the community on the fundamental applications of law.

This report is the culmination of both qualitative and quantitative research conducted within the past two years and underscores the vital role of the church in legal matters.

The findings emphasize the necessity for the church to actively participate as an advocate and reconciler, rather than remaining a passive observer in the struggles faced by its congregation.

Justice Prof. Joel Ngugi, a judge of the Court of Appeal and the chief guest at the report’s launch, challenged church leaders to address the underlying issues that bind individuals in unresolved disputes and confusion regarding their rights, which often perpetuate cycles of conflict.

He urged them to engage with the real disputes and injustices that people encounter daily, including land disputes, family conflicts, inheritance issues, and other community disagreements.

During his address, Justice Ngugi also advocated for the implementation of an Alternative Justice System, which aims to bring justice closer to the community through reconciliation, mediation, and other restorative processes.

This approach not only addresses immediate legal concerns but also fosters a culture of understanding and cooperation within the community.

Bishop Rose Okeno of the ACK Diocese of Butere, who hosted the event, emphasized the report’s findings regarding the church’s role in legal matters. She urged the clergy to actively contribute to creating a safe environment that facilitates equitable access to justice for all individuals.

Bishop Okeno also called upon government leaders to leverage their positions to ensure justice is upheld for every citizen.

The event was honored by the presence of Bishop Professor Joseph Galgalo, the ACK Provincial Secretary, who represented the Most Reverend Dr. Jackson Ole Sapit, the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya
